SMERCZYNSKI was was an attractive, intelligent and strong willed individual who ran a very succesfull millinery business (The Up to Date Millinery hat store) at a time when neither women nor Polish immigrants were accepted into the Yankee dominated business world. Her customers came from the greater Salem area and included wealthy clientele from Hamilton, Wenham and Beverly Farms. She was born in March 1880 at Poland.1 She was the daughter of Wojciech SMERCZYNSKI and Victoria SCHMIDT. Mary was appointed legal guardian of her siblings, Helen, Albert, Katie, Steven and Charles after her mother died and her father, Wojciech, remarried.2 Mary V. SMERCZYNSKI married Peter ROBACZEWSKI on 28 November 1912 at Salem, MA.3 Mary V.
